Driving Range Complex Renovation
A municipal golf complex in a large Northern Virginia county had battled higher than normal maintenance costs of their driving range facility for many years. Over time, the county struggled to maintain the driving range turf due to inadequate soil and improper drainage – both of which led to the need for over fertilization, poor root structure, thin or spotty turf and bad washouts. Ultimately, the lack of quality soil to promote strong turf increased the cost of maintenance with sub-standard results. In 2018, the county put the renovation of this driving range facility out to bid with a goal of reducing maintenance costs over the long run by growing a naturally healthier stand of turf, while significantly improving the aesthetics of the facility.
Luck Ecosystems partnered with the golf course contractor and provided GreenScience Premium Topsoil, sourced from our Greene Plant in Ruckersville Virginia. The Premium Topsoil was specified in a 4 – 6-inch layer, placed on top of the subsoil to promote quick and healthy sod establishment. Our premium topsoil has a consistent texture and is free of deleterious materials. This level of consistency in both texture and moisture level helps installers maintain good material flow and consistent spread depth. Furthermore, during our production process we proportionately blend in natural organic matter to create a homogenous, nutrient rich and PH-balanced media to support healthy turf growth.
In addition to providing consistent, high quality topsoil for this project, what set the job apart was Luck Ecosystems’ flexibility and partnership with the golf course contractor. After closer examination of the remediation and reconstruction required, the contractor increased their initial estimate for topsoil from 2,000 tons to nearly 10,000 tons. Drawing on our logistics and transportation expertise and our supply of on-hand, readily available inventory, our team mobilized more than 400 truckloads of material from our Greene Plant in central Virginia, 90 miles north, quickly fulfilling an order that had increased by a factor of five.
The thoughtful design and well executed installation of GreenScience Premium Topsoil at the renovated facility will reduce overall maintenance costs for the county, create a practice facility that meets the high aesthetic standard of the golf industry, and ultimately attract higher attendance.
